Great Bend, city (1990 pop. 15,427), seat of Barton co., central Kans., on a bend in the Arkansas River; settled and inc. 1872. It is a trade and shipping center for a wheat and oil region. Alfalfa pellets and farm machinery are manufactured. Great Bend was located on the old Santa Fe Trail Santa Fe National Historic Trail (see National Parks and Monuments (table) follows the route of the old trail, with many sites marked or restored.
