Great Salt Plains State Park Location: 8 miles north of Jet on SH 38. Facilities: 64 semi-modern campsites, 106 primitive campsites, horsemen's camp, 6 cabins, showers, picnic areas, group picnic pavilions, trails (7+ miles), swimming beach, 4 boat ramps, community center, ball field (é). Activities: Camping, boating, fishing, swimming, sailboarding, water-skiing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, birding, rock hounding. Special Features: The Great Salt Plains is the only place in the world where visitors can dig for hourglass-shaped selenite crystals. Found just beneath the surface, the crystals are believed to be evidence that a prehistoric sea once covered this area. The park also features the 9,300-acre Great Salt Plains Lake, which is half as salty as the ocean and averages only about 4 feet of depth, but offers good fishing. The adjacent Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge (see entry on the national refuges section) is home to golden and bald eagles and is a resting place for nearly 250 species of migratory birds.
