Established: 1960.
Location: 26 miles west of New York City.
Facilities: Visitor contact station, viewing sites, trails, auto tour route, 2 environmental education centers..
Activities: Hiking, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features: Refuge supports more than 244 species of birds (including one of the largest breeding populations of eastern bluebirds in the state), 39 species of reptiles and amphibians, 29 species of fish, 33 species of mammals, and approximately 600 species of plants. Additionally, 26 of these species are state-listed as being threatened or endangered including the bog turtle, wood turtle, and blue-spotted salamander.
Habitats: 7,600 acres of swamp woodland, hardwood ridges, cattail marsh, grassland, ponds and streams.
Access: Open from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: Wood ducks, mallards, Canada goose, black duck, loons, eastern bluebird, turkey vultures, wild turkeys, eastern chipmunk, shrews, voles, and white-tailed deer.
