Great Victoria Desert

Arid region, Western Australia and South Australia. Lying between Gibson Desert on the north and Nullarbor Plain on the south, it extends east from Kalgoorlie almost to the Stuart Range. Much of its eastern end is occupied by the Central and North West Aboriginal reserves. A vast expanse of sand hills, it is crossed by the Laverton–Warburton Mission Track, which links the mission station in the Warburton Range with Laverton, 350 mi (560 km) southwest. There are several national parks and reserves in the area, including the Great Victoria Desert Nature Reserve and the Nullarbor National Park.

Great Victoria Desert

a sand desert in southern Australia between 26° and 30° S lat. Its area is 300,000 sq km. The desert stretches 1,200 km from Stuart Range in the east (South Australia) to the Salt Lakes plain in the west (Western Australia). The greatest width in the eastern part is 550km, and the average elevation is 150–300 m. The characteristic relief forms are sand dunes (up to 10–30 m high), extending from the west-northeast to the east-southeast along the direction of the prevailing winds. The dunes are stabilized by a sod of the spiky grass spinifex. There are acacias and scrub eucalypti in the troughs between the dunes. In years with maximum winter precipitation, the total precipitation is from 125 to 250 mm a year. The desert is almost without springs and is difficult to cross. It was first transversed in 1875 by the English explorer E. Giles.
