Greater Sunda Islands
the main part of the Malay Archipelago, including the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. They are located in an Alpine geosynclinal region and characterized by present-day active volcanoes and the predominance of equatorial forest topography. Except for the northern districts of Kalimantan Island (where part of Malaysia is located) and Brunei (a protec torate of Great Britain), the Greater Sunda Islands are part of Indonesia.
