Green, Theodore (Francis) (1867–1966) U.S. senator, governor; born in Providence, R.I. A lawyer by training, he went on to work in the financial sector (1912–27). His initial bids to become governor and a U.S. representative failed, but he eventually became governor of Rhode Island (Dem., 1933–37). He went on to a long career in the U.S. Senate (1937–61) and made his major mark with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1938–59; chairman 1957–59). By the end he was the oldest man ever to serve in the U.S. Senate.
