Greenbelt, city (1990 pop. 21,096), Prince Georges co., W central Md., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; chartered 1937. Greenbelt was planned and built by the federal government as an experimental model community for families of modest income. The huge National Agricultural Research Center borders the city on two sides, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is nearby. Greenbelt will alter the existing one-story warehouse on the site and will construct five new stories with eight residential units and one commercial unit. To alter the new greenbelt ordinance, four of the five supervisors would have to agree and hold a public hearing. The park, located in the Barber Valley, will be named for his wife, Marianne Williams, and will feature two miles of greenbelt pathways, more than one mile of river frontage and open space with natural settings. |
