On southeastern border of WV, northeast of Beckley; organized Oct 20, 1778 from Montgomery and Botetcourt counties (in VA). Name Origin: For the principal river of the county, whose name refers to the thorny vine Smilax rotundifolia found abundantly on its banks.

Area (sq mi): 1024.43 (land 1021.26; water 3.17). Pop per sq mi: 34.30.
Pop 2005: 35,027. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 -0.70%. Pop 2000: 34,453 (White 94.70%; Black or African American 3.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.70%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.50%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 41.60.
Income 2000: per capita $16,247; median household $26,927; Pop below poverty level: 18.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,952-$23,680.
Unemployment 2004: 5.70%. Change from 2000: -0.50%. Median travel time to work: 24.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 16.90%.
