Greeneville, town (1990 pop. 13,532), seat of Greene co., NE Tenn., in a tobacco, dairy, and cattle area; founded 1783, inc. 1875. It is a leading tobacco market with plants that produce various light manufactures. In 1785, Greeneville succeeded Jonesboro as the capital of the State of Franklin (see Franklin, State of Franklin, State of, government (1784–88) formed by the inhabitants of Washington, Sullivan, and Greene counties in present-day E Tennessee after North Carolina ceded (June, 1784) its western lands to the United States.
