Coleraine

Coleraine (kōlrān`), town (1991 pop. 16,450) and district, N Northern Ireland, near the mouth of the Bann River. Coleraine is a port. Its industries include distilling, linen milling, the curing of ham and bacon, light engineering, and salmon fishing. There is also a large chemical fiber plant. In 1613, James I gave the site of the town to the corporations of the City of London for development. The New Univ. of Ulster was founded in Coleraine in 1965.

Coleraine

District (pop., 2001: 56,315), Northern Ireland. Established in 1973, it is primarily an agricultural area. Flint implements found there date back to nearly 7000 BC and provide the earliest evidence of human occupation in Ireland. The administrative centre, Coleraine town, on the River Bann, was colonized by companies from the City of London in the 17th century; it is the seat of the New University of Ulster (founded 1965).
