On the northwestern border of SC, west of Spartanburg; organized Mar 22, 1786 from Ninety Six District. Name Origin: Either for Gen. Nathanael Greene (1742-86), Revolutionary War hero, or for Isaac Green (1762-1831), pioneer and owner of the mill around which the town of Greenville grew.
