In north-central MS, northwest of Columbus; organized May 9, 1870 from Carroll and Tallahatchie counties. Name Origin: Believed to have been named for the island in the West Indies, chosen when the towns of Pittsburg and Tullohoma united after some years of rivalry. There is also a theory that it is a form of Granada, Spain.
