Name Origin: Believed to have been named for the island in the West Indies, chosen when the towns of Pittsburg and Tullohoma united after some years of rivalry. There is also a theory that it is a form of Granada, Spain. Area (sq mi): 449.38 (land 421.79; water 27.58). Pop per sq mi: 54.20. Pop 2005: 22,861. State rank: 41. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.70%; 1990-2000 7.90%. Pop 2000: 23,263 (White 57.70%; Black or African American 40.90%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 0.70%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 35.70. Income 2000: per capita $13,786; median household $27,385; Pop below poverty level: 20.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,868-$22,356. Unemployment 2004: 6.40%.
