Gridley, Charles

    0.01 sec.
Gridley, Charles (Vernon) (1844–98) naval officer; born in Logansport, Ind. As a Naval Academy student, he was assigned to active duty in the Civil War; for over 30 years he filled the standard posts of a career officer. Assigned as captain to the Olympia, he found himself in Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, when Admiral George Dewey gave the famous command, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley." Evidently under great strain from the battle, he was invalided home but died en route in Kobe, Japan.
