Name Origin: For Alexander Griggs (1838-1903), a Red River pilot known as "Captain," closely identified with the earliest navigation on the Red River. Area (sq mi): 716.17 (land 708.50; water 7.67). Pop per sq mi: 3.50. Pop 2005: 2,497. State rank: 40. Pop change: 2000-20005 -9.30%; 1990-2000 -16.60%. Pop 2000: 2,754 (White 99.10%; Black or African American 0.00%; Hispanic or Latino 0.40%; Asian 0.10%; Other 0.50%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 45.80.
