Avsiuk, Grigorii Aleksandrovich
Born Dec. 16 (29), 1906, in St. Petersburg. Soviet physiographer, specialist in glaciology; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU since 1947. Avsiuk is the deputy academician-secretary of the Division of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography of the Earth Sciences Section. He is the initiator of stationary observations of mountain glaciers. Since 1956 he has directed the preparation and execution of Soviet glaciological research in the program of the International Geophysical Year and other international projects. The works of Avsiuk are devoted to the study of contemporary glaciation in the Tien Shan, the study of temperature regime in glaciers, and general problems of glaciology. His principal works are Mountains of Southeastern Kazakhstan (1945; coauthor) and “Temperature of Ice Within Glaciers” (1956; in Trudy In-ta geografii AN SSSR [Works From the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR], no. 67).
