Gross, Chaim (1904–91) sculptor, teacher; born in Wolow, Galicia (now Poland). During World War I he and his family fled to Budapest (c. 1914), and he emigrated to New York City (1921), where he studied at the Educational Alliance Art School (1921) and the Beaux-Arts (1922–26). He taught at many institutions and was known for his wood and stone expressionistic figures, such as Strong Woman (1935). |
