Grosseto (grōs-sā`tō), city (1991 pop. 71,257), central Italy, capital of Grosseto prov., Tuscany region, on the Ombrone River near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Situated in the reclaimed Maremma Maremma , coastal area in Tuscany, central Italy, along the Tyrrhenian Sea and extending E to the Apennines. A flourishing region in Etruscan and early Roman times, it became marshy and was largely abandoned in the Middle Ages because of malaria.
