Grossu, Semen Kuz’mich 

Born Mar. 18, 1934, in Novose-lovka, Sarata Raion, Odessa Oblast. Soviet state and party figure. Candidate of economic sciences (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1961.

The son of a peasant, Grossu graduated from the Kishinev Agricultural Institute in 1959. Between 1959 and 1964 he was chief agronomist and chairman of a kolkhoz in the Moldavian SSR. From 1964 to 1967 he was head of the Suvorovo raion agricultural production administration in the Moldavian SSR. From 1967 to 1970, Grossu served as first secretary of the Kriuliany raion committee of the Communist Party of Moldavia; he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldavia from 1970 to 1976.

In 1976, Grossu became chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Moldavian SSR and minister of foreign affairs. First secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Moldavia since 1980, Grossu became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1981. He was a deputy to the sixth, seventh, ninth, and tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Grossu has received the Order of Lenin and two other orders.
