The temporary current in the ground line, caused by a failing electrical component or interference from an external electrical source such as a thunderstorm. See ground.

Accidental grounding of a conductor.

ground fault
1. An electrical short-circuit involving one or more phase conductors and ground.
2. An insulation fault between a conductor and ground or the frame of a device.

A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a ground fault that is an accidental path between a current and the ground.
The polarity and grounding of all receptacles within six feet of interior plumbing fixtures, and all receptacles in the garage or carport, and on the exterior of inspected structures will be tested along with the operation of ground fault circuit interrupters.
If not, we may have a mild ground fault that may not seem like a big deal, but within 2 or 3 seconds it becomes a 12 kV phase-to-phase fault not far from our bus, which can cause equipment damage.
