The Horned Owl program used a twin-engine C-12 aircraft fitted with an advanced ground-penetrating radar system to look for roadside bombs and weapon caches buried in the desert terrain.
Besides saving archaeologists a lot of digging, time, and money, ground-penetrating radar permits them to study sites that are considered off-limits to physical disturbances.
Ground-penetrating radar located an average of 72% of the drain lines in 13 test plots in a study by scientists from the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Ohio State University.
