Groux, Charles de

Born Aug. 4. 1825, in Comines. France; died Mar. 30, 1870, in Brussels. Belgian painter.

Groux studied at the Academy of Arts in Brussels with F. Navez and in Düsseldorf. He was one of the creators of the Free Society of the Fine Arts (1868). A master of realistic genre painting who was influenced by G. Courbet and J. F. Millet, Groux painted pictures of unfortunate, suffering people, who were modest and reserved in expressing their feelings. His work is characterized by restrained color and simple, terse composition (Prayer Before Dinner, Museum of Modern Art. Brussels).
