Grove Vallejo, Marmaduque 

Born July 6. 1879. in Copiapó; died May 15, 1954, in Santiago. Chilean military and political figure.

Grove Vallejo received a military education. In 1925 he became a member of the ruling junta, and in 1926 he became a military attaché in London. He broke with the government of the dictator Ibáñez del Campo in 1928 and emigrated to Argentina. After the overthrow of Ibáñez in 1931, Grove Vallejo became commander of the Chilean Air Force. In 1932 he was war minister of the so-called Socialist Republic of Chile. Later, as leader of the Socialist Party of Chile (founded in 1933), he took an active part in creating the Popular Front in 1936, and he was its president from April 1938 to December 1940. As a senator (1933–49), he advocated recognition of the USSR. From 1935 to 1937. Grove Vallejo was secretary-general of the Socialist Party of Chile, and in 1937 he became its president.
