Grube, Aleksandr Vasil’evich 

Born Aug. 19 (31), 1894, in the village of Grigor’evka, Bashkir ASSR. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the Byelorussian SSR (1944).

Grube studied sculpture without a teacher. From 1918 he worked in Byelorussia and from 1941 in Moscow. He was chairman of the board of the Artists’ Union of the Byelorussian SSR from 1942 to 1944. Grube does small and monumental sculpture. He was influenced by Byelorussian wooden folk sculpture. Among Grube’s works are Labor (1929) and The Woman Tractor Driver (1935), both of which are in wood and are located in the Museum of Art of the Byelorussian SSR, Minsk. He was also the creator of A Portrait of L. M. Dovator (plaster of paris, 1942, Tret’iakov Gallery), A Monument to V. V. Kuibyshev in Kokchetav (bronze, 1948), The Steel Workers (plaster of paris, 1957; property of Ministry of Culture of the USSR). Grube has been awarded two orders, as well as medals.
