Guadix

Guadix (gwäthēsh`), town (1990 pop. 20,975), Granada prov., S Spain, in Andalusia. It is the center of a farm area growing olives, flax, wheat, and hemp. Guadix was a Roman colony and, under the Visigoths, an episcopal see. It contains an 18th-century cathedral and the remains of a Moorish citadel. Just outside the city are many picturesque caves inhabited by Gypsies.
