a state in southeastern Brazil, on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Guanabara Bay. Area, 1,356 sq km. Population, 4,394,000 (1970). Its administrative center is Rio de Janeiro. The state consists of Rio de Janeiro and its suburbs. It is second (after Sāo Paulo) in economic significance among the states of Brazil. Industries include textiles, metalworking, chemicals, and food processing.
