Guardi, Francesco

Also found in: Wikipedia, Hutchinson 0.15 sec.
Guardi, Francesco (fränchās`kō gwär`dē), 1712–93, Venetian landscape and architectural painter. A follower of Canaletto, he developed a freer style of great brilliance. Guardi's work ranges from elaborate architectural scenes to spontaneous and delightful capricci, both in painting and drawings. His many charming landscapes are in the galleries of London, Paris, Venice, and Boston. The Metropolitan Museum and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., each have several.

(born 1712, Venice—died 1793, Venice) Italian landscape painter. He and his two brothers collaborated in a flourishing studio-workshop in Venice; their sister was married to Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. By the 1750s Francesco was producing vedute (view paintings) of Venice. His many romantic impressions of the city never achieved the popularity of Canaletto's near-photographic records of its architecture, and his work came to be appreciated only after the rise of Impressionism.
