Guayas RiverRiver, western Ecuador. Its two principal tributaries, the Daule and Babahoyo rivers, rise on the western slopes of the Andes Mountains and unite just above the city of Guayaquil. Below the city it flows through a low-lying delta and enters the Gulf of Guayaquil. Its length to the end of the longest tributary is about 200 mi (320 km). Its floodplain is Ecuador's most fertile region and the source of almost all of its banana crop. How to thank TFD for its existence? Its main avenue is 9 de Octubre, stretching from the tip of the Guayas River to Malecon del Estero Salado. It was here, in the basin of the Guayas River, that commercial cacao plantations were first developed by Spanish colonists to supplant Mesoamerican production. This 11-story hotel, with an 80-store shopping center inside, is just three blocks from Malecon 2000, the recently completed two-kilometer promenade along the Guayas River that has turned the waterfront into a safe cultural, entertainment and restaurant area. |
