Gubarev, Aleksei Aleksandrovich 

Born Mar. 29, 1931, in the village of Gvardeitsy, Borskoe Raion, Kuibyshev Oblast. Pilot-cosmonaut of the USSR. Hero of the Soviet Union (1975, 1978). Member of the CPSU since 1957.

Gubarev served in air force units after graduating from a naval aviation school in 1952. He graduated from the Air Force Academy (now the Iu. A. Gagarin Air Force Academy) in 1961 and was named a cosmonaut in 1963.

From Jan. 11 to Feb. 9, 1975, Gubarev flew with G. M. Grechko as commander of Soyuz 17, which docked with the Salyut 4 space station. Gubarev’s flight time was 29 days 13 hr 20 min. Between Mar. 2 and Mar. 10, 1978, flying aboard Soyuz 28, Gubarev and V. Remek docked with the Salyut 6 space station, which was being manned by Iu. V. Romanenko and G. M. Grechko and which was already docked with Soyuz 27. Gubarev’s flight time was 7 days 22 hr 16 min.

Gubarev has been awarded the title of Hero of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, two Orders of Lenin, and various medals.
