Gubkin

a city in the northern part of Belgorod Oblast, RSFSR. Railroad station on the Staryi Oskol-Saraevka line; situated on the Belgorod-Voronezh highway. Population 56,000 (1971).

Gubkin arose in the 1930’s in connection with the investigation and exploitation of the iron ores of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (KMA) at the site of the village of Korobkovo. In 1939 the village became a settlement and the name of I. M. Gubkin was conferred on it. It became a city in 1955. Gubkin is the center of iron ore mining. It has an ore dressing combine; plants producing pastel paints, ferroconcrete articles, and construction materials; a meat-packing plant; and a garment factory. The city is the home of the Scientific Research Institute on KMA Problems and has a branch of the All-Union Correspondence Polytechnic Institute, a mining technicum, a branch of the Belgorod Construction Technicum, a medical school, and a music school.
