Gudovich, Ivan Vasil’evich

Born 1741 ; died January 1820 in Ol’gopol’, now in Bershad’ Raion, Vinnitsa Oblast. Field marshal in the Russian Army (1807) and count (1797).

Gudovich studied at the universities of Königsberg and Leipzig. Beginning in 1759 he served in the military. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–74, he distinguished himself at Khotin (1769), the Larga and Kagul rivers (1770), and Zhurzhevaia (1771). During the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–91, he directed the capture of Khadzhibei (modern Odessa) in 1789, Kiliia in 1790, and Anapa in 1791. In 1806 he became commander of troops in the Transcaucasus, subsequently conquering the Baku, Sheki, and Derbent khanates. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–12, he won a victory at Arpachai. but was unsuccessful in the assault of Yerevan (1808). From 1809 until his retirement in February 1812, he was commander in chief in Moscow, as well as a member of the State Council and a senator.
