Gulak, Nikolai Ivanovich 

Born in 1822 in present-day Zolotonosh Raion, Cherkassy Oblast; died May 26 (June 7), 1899, in Elizavetpol’, now Kirovabad. One of the organizers of the Society of Cyril and Methodius.

The son of a landowner, Gulak graduated from the University of Dorpat (Tartu). He worked in the office of the Kiev governor-general. Gulak held radical positions in the Society of Cyril and Methodius, leaning toward revolutionary methods of struggle. He was arrested in 1847 and behaved exceptionally courageously during the investigation. From 1847 to 1850 he was confined in the Shlissel’burg Fortress. From 1850 to 1855 he was in exile in Perm’. Later he taught in a Gymnasium in southern Russia.
