Gulbene

 

a city and center of Gulbene Raion, Latvian SSR. Located 179 km east of Riga, it is a junction for railroad lines to Riga, Pytalovo, Valga, and Plavinas. The city has railroad enterprises, a brewery, and a lumber combine. Gulbene was first mentioned in 1224 and officially became a city in 1928.
