Gulevich, Vladimir Sergeevich 

Born Nov. 6 (18), 1867, in Riazan’; died Sept. 6, 1933, in Moscow. Soviet biochemist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929).

Gulevich graduated from the department of medicine of Moscow University in 1890 and continued to work there. He received the degree of doctor of medicine in 1896. From 1899 to 1900 he was a professor at the University of Kharkov and from 1900, at Moscow University. At the same time he worked at other scientific establishments in Moscow and Leningrad (the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine, the Laboratory of Animal Physiology and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and others). His principal works were in the biochemistry of nitrogen metabolism in animals and the chemistry of amino acids and proteins. Of particular importance was his contribution to the chemistry and biochemistry of muscle tissue. Gulevich discovered a number of new nitrogen compounds in the composition of muscles, including carnosine and carnitine (vitamin BT). Anserine was also discovered in his laboratory.
