Gulf State Park Location: In the city of Gulf Shores on the coast of Alabama. Facilities: 486 modern campsites, comfort stations (é), camp store (é), 21 family cottages (é), picnic areas, group pavilions, trails (temporarily closed due to Hurricane Katrina), marina, snack bar, 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, playground. Activities: Camping, boating, fishing (saltwater and freshwater), swimming, water skiing, hiking, bicycling, tennis, golf, nature programs. Special Features: The park is located along the Gulf of Mexico, with 2.5 miles of sugar white sand beach, and plans are currently being developed for a new hotel, restaurant, and conference center on the beach. The park's 825-foot fishing pier on the Gulf was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, but plans also are underway to construct a new pier. The park also includes Lake Shelby, a 900-acre lake that offers good freshwater fishing as well as boating and swimming. The resort's 18-hole championship golf course is near the lake.
