Gumperz, John

Gumperz, John (1922–  ) linguist; birthplace unknown. He studied at the Universities of Cincinnati and Michigan (Ph.D. 1954). A specialist in linguistic anthropology, his extensive list of publications includes Language in Social Groups (1971) and Discourse Strategies (1982). He was a professor of anthropology at the University of California: Berkeley.
