Gurbani

dates of birth and death unknown. Azerbaijani ashug (bard) and poet of the 16th century.

Gurbani’s love lyrics are distinguished by sincerity and worldliness. At times his poems sound a note of protest against the injustices of the world. Gurbani’s creative work influenced the development of ashug poetry. The anonymous dastan (epic song) Gurbani, created, most likely, in the 17th or 18th century, includes episodes from the biography of the poet and samples of his lyrics.
