Guru Ivanovich Marchuk

Marchuk, Guru Ivanovich 

Born June 8, 1925, in the village of Petro-Khersonets, now in Grachevka Raion, Orenburg Oblast. Soviet mathematician. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1962). Member of the CPSU since 1947.

Marchuk graduated from Leningrad State University in 1949. From 1953 to 1962 he worked at the Physics and Energetics Institute in Obninsk, and from 1962 to 1964 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Marchuk became director of the Computer Center of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1964. In 1969 he was appointed deputy chairman of the presidium of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Marchuk’s principal works deal with computer and applied mathematics. He constructed an algorithm for the numerical solution of the equations of neutron transport that has become the foundation for calculating the critical parameters of nuclear reactors. He has also carried out a number of theoretical studies on methods of short-term weather forecasts and the dynamics of the atmosphere and the ocean. Marchuk is presently working on developing new numerical methods of solving problems connected with the design of automated control systems.

A recipient of the Lenin Prize (1961), Marchuk has been awarded two Orders of Lenin and several medals.
