Born Oct. 11, 1805, in Munich; died Aug. 21, 1870, in Vienna. German advocate of democracy and republicanism.

During the Revolution of 1848–49 in Germany, Struve helped organize uprisings in Baden in April and September 1848. After the defeat of the second uprising he was arrested. Released in May 1849 by participants in a third uprising, he joined a provisional revolutionary government. In 1850 he became one of the leaders of a petit bourgeois émigré organization in London. In 1851, Struve emigrated to the USA, where he served in the Civil War (1861–65) on the side of the North. In 1863 he returned to Europe.
