Guwahati (g `wəhä'tē) or Gauhati (gouhä`tē), city (1991 pop. 584,342), Assam state, NE India, on the Brahmaputra River. It is a railroad hub and a shipping point for tea, rice, jute, and cotton. The town has an oil refinery and is the site of Guwahati Univ. and Earle Law School. Guwahati is identified with Pragjyoshapura, the capital of King Bhavadatta, who is mentioned in the great Sanskrit epic Mahabharata Mahabharata (məhä'bär`ətə), classical Sanskrit epic of India, probably composed between 200 B.C. and A.D. 200...... Click the link for more information. . The town was overrun by Muslim forces in the 17th cent. Guwahatior GauhatiCity (pop., 2001: 809,895), western Assam state, northeastern India. Located on the Brahmaputra River, it was the capital of the Hindu kingdom of Kamarupa (under the name of Pragjyotisa) c. AD 400. Taken by the Ahoms, it became the seat of the Ahom governor of Lower Assam in 1681. It was ceded to the British in 1826 and was the administrative seat for Assam until 1874.
