Gvozdev, Aleksei Aleksandrovich
Born Feb. 24 (Mar. 8), 1887, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 10, 1939, in Leningrad. Soviet theatrical and literary scholar, critic, and teacher. Gvozdev graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1913 and began his scholarly activities in 1920. He founded a discipline that did not exist in Russian prerevolutionary studies—the history of the Western European theater. Gvozdev’s major work is The Western European Theater at the Turn of the 20th Century (1939). He wrote theatrical reviews and worked as a teacher. WORKSIz istorii teatra i dramy.
