Györ-Sopron

Györ-Sopron 

a megye (county) in northwestern Hungary, near the border with Austria and Czechoslovakia. Area, 4,000 sq km; population, 407,000 (1970). The administrative center is the city of Györ. The area of the megye is a fertile tilled plain, the Kisalfold, which is irrigated by the Danube and its tributary, the Raba.

Györ-Sopron is a well-developed agrarian and industrial region, with intensive and varied agriculture: wheat, special types of barley (for brewing beer), feed and fodder crops, and industrial crops (sugar beets and flax) are cultivated. There is also truck farming and livestock raising (127,000 head of dairy cattle and 284,000 pigs in 1968). Food industry pre-dominates (sugar, flour, vegetable oil, milk, and meat, as well as distilling). There is machine building and textile industry in Györ, Sopron, and Mosonmagyarovar, and alumina is produced in Mosonmagyarovar.
