Lázár, György
Born Sept. 15, 1924, in Isaszeg. Hungarian state and party figure. The son of a worker, Lázár graduated from a state industrial school in 1942 and subsequently worked as a draftsman at an enterprise in Budapest. He joined the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party in 1945. Between 1948 and 1970 he held a series of positions with the State Planning Committee: he served as chief of a department, chief of an administration, and deputy chairman of the committee. Lázár was a member of the Hungarian Central Control Commission from 1963 to 1968. From 1970 to 1973, he served concurrently as minister of labor and cochairman of the All-Hungarian Council on Youth and Education. Between July 1973 and May 1975 he was deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Hungarian People’s Republic (HPR) and chairman of the State Planning Commission and the State Planning Committee; from September 1973 to April 1975 he was also Hungary’s permanent representative to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON). Lázár became a member of the Central Committee of the Hun garian Socialist Workers’ Party in November 1970 and a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee in March 1975.
