Gömbös, Gyula
Born Dec. 26, 1886, in Murga, Tolna Comitat; died Oct. 6, 1936, in Munich. Hungarian statesman and political figure. Received a military education. Military attaché in Zagreb in 1918. In 1920, Gömbös became a deputy to the National Assembly. In 1922-23 and after 1928 he was one of the leaders, and after 1932 the president, of the Unity Party, which represented the Hungarian landed aristocracy and the financial oligarchy. From 1923 to 1928 he was the leader of the Party for the Protection of the Race, which he created. In 1928-29 he was secretary of state, from 1929 to 1936 minister of war, and from October 1932 to October 1936 prime minister of Hungary. He pursued a policy of terrorism against the working class.
