Hämeenlinna (hă`mānlĭn'nä), Swed. Tavastehus, city (1998 pop. 45,555), capital of Southern Finland prov., S Finland. It is a lake port and a manufacturing town with plywood mills, tanneries, spool mills, and rubber works. Built around a 13th-century castle on Lake Vanajavesi, the city was chartered in 1638. The beautiful Aulanko-Karlberg natural park nearby is a tourist center. The composer Jean Sibelius Sibelius, Jean Julius Christian , 1865–1957, Finnish composer. Sibelius was a highly personal, romantic composer, yet at the same time he represents the culmination of nationalism in Finnish music.

Population, 41,000 (1975). Industries include metallurgy, saw-milling, and the manufacture of motor vehicles, wood products, textiles, and candy. The Silver Line lake cruise begins at Hämeenlinna.
