Hérault 

a department in southern France, on the Mediterranean Sea. Located partially in the Massif Central. Area, 6,100 sq km. Population, 648,000 (1975). The capital is Montpellier.

In 1968, 20 percent of the department’s economically active population was employed in agriculture, and 15 percent in industry. The main branches of the economy are viticulture and wine- making. In 1970 vineyards covered 158,500 hectares, and wine production was 11.4 million hectoliters. Hérault has a machinebuilding industry, located in Montpellier and Beziers, a chemical industry, located in Frontignan, and a food-processing industry. The resorts of Balaruc-les-Bains and Valras-Plage and the port of Sète are situated on the coast.
