Höglund, Zeth

Born Apr. 29, 1884, in Göteborg; died Aug. 13, 1956, in Stockholm. Figure in the Swedish working-class movement.

The son of a merchant, Höglund joined the Social Democratic Labor Party of Sweden (SDLPS) in 1902. In 1909 he became chairman of the administrative board of the Social Democratic Youth Association of Sweden. He was a leader of the left wing of the Swedish Social Democrats. During World War I he was an internationalist and a member of the Zimmerwald Left.

In 1917, Höglund helped found the Communist Party of Sweden, which was called the Left Social Democratic Party of Sweden until 1921. He served as the party’s chairman in 1917, from 1919 to 1921, and from 1921 to 1924. In 1924, Höglund was expelled from the party for right opportunism. He rejoined the SDLPS in 1926 and served on its Executive Committee from 1928 to 1944. In the period before and during World War II he was an antifascist. After the war Höglund retired from political life.
