Hagenmuller, Paul 

Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Strasbourg. French chemist.

Hagenmuller graduated from the faculty of natural sciences at the University of Paris. In 1949 he became an assistant at the Sorbonne. Beginning in 1954 he was a lecturer at the University of Saigon, and beginning in 1956, at the University of Rennes, where he became a professor in 1958. In 1960 he began teaching at the University of Bordeaux, where he is director of the laboratory of the chemistry of solids of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Hagenmuller is also head of the division of the chemistry and physical chemistry of metals of the CNRS and the section of the chemistry of solids of the Consultative Committee of French Universities.

Hagenmuller’s main works are devoted to the study of the dependence of the crystal structure of the oxides and fluorides of transition metals on their physical properties, such as magnetic, optical, and electric properties.

Hagenmuller is a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).
