Established: Authorized on November 18, 1988.
Location: In south-central Idaho near the town of Hagerman, off US 30.
Facilities: Information center, boardwalk, overlook.
Activities: Hiking, fishing, bicycling, hunting, ranger-guided tours, interpretive programs.
Special Features: Site protects the world's richest known fossil deposits from the late Pliocene epoch, 3-4 million years ago. These 220+ species of plants and animals represent the last glimpse of time that existed before the Ice Age, and the earliest appearances of modern flora and fauna. The fossils, which are embedded in the banks of the Snake River, have been exposed by the carving action of the river.
