Hagerstown (hā`gərztoun'), city (1990 pop. 35,445), seat of Washington co., NW Md., on Antietam Creek near its junction with the Potomac River, in the fertile Cumberland Valley Cumberland Valley, 75 mi (121 km) long and from 15 to 20 mi (24–32 km) wide, part of the great Appalachian valley, between the Potomac and Susquehanna rivers, W Md. and S Pa.
